Linoleum is less common now than it was several decades ago. However, it’s making a comeback here in Downtown Atlanta as an environmentally friendly flooring option made from renewable, natural materials. At Floor Coverings International Intown Atlanta, we partner with national flooring manufacturers to bring you a wide selection of linoleum options. Read on to see if this is the right choice for your home or business.
Invented in 1860 by Englishman Frederick Walton, linoleum first referred to Walton’s brand name. However, it quickly became generic as competitors cropped up and made improvements to the manufacturing process. It grew in popularity as an inexpensive flooring option for high traffic areas like hallways. Additionally, it’s water-resistance and soft feel underfoot made it a popular kitchen flooring choice. However, starting in the 1950s, linoleum began to be replaced by other hard flooring options. Today it has largely been replaced by vinyl.
Linoleum is made from natural materials including solidified linseed oil, tree resins, jute, cork dust, and mineral fillers such as calcium carbonate. Most linoleum today is inlaid linoleum, which has its pigments mixed throughout the entire material rather than printed on the surface. This makes it a long-lasting, wear-resistant flooring option, since the coloring will not scratch off from heavy traffic or from years of use.
Linoleum comes in different grades known as gauges. Two common gauge thicknesses include 0.080” and 0.100”. Heavier gauges are excellent choices for commercial areas. Another benefit to linoleum is its flexibility. Unlike rigid materials, like ceramic tile, linoleum will not crack. This makes it very useful for certain building applications.
Linoleum comes in a wide variety of colors and is available in sheet and tile forms. Because it is easy to install, linoleum is highly customizable and can be used to create unique shapes and patterns in flooring. Opt for bold, vibrant coloring for a fun and energizing design. Or instead choose coloring that mimics natural stone for a relaxing design that fits with any décor.
