Ash Hardwood Flooring AtlantaWith so many gorgeous hardwood species to choose from, narrowing your pick to just one can be a daunting task. Here at Floor Coverings International Intown Atlanta, our experts love ash hardwood in particular for its beauty and comfort under foot. Below are the ash wood basics you’ll need to know when choosing hardwood flooring for your Atlanta home.

About the Ash Tree Species

Ash hardwood flooring is harvested from ash trees grown domestically and abroad. The ash tree is commonly grown in North America, but it can also be imported from other countries including China. Unfortunately, pests like the Emerald Ash Borer are threatening the domestic tree population.

Appearance

There are a number of different types of ash tree, including white, black, and olive. These different types can subtly affect the graining and tint of the wood, but ash hardwood in general has a distinct appearance. Ash is known for its large swirling grain and is commonly found in light, milky colors. The soft and graceful appearance of ash is what draws most homebuyers to choose this species over others.

Density

Ash scores 1,320 on the Janka hardness scale, which is a scale for ranking a wood’s density. In comparison, red oak hardwood, which is considered the standard for durability, scores 1,290. Ash wood flooring makes for a sufficiently durable floor, but since it falls on the softer end of the Janka scale, it is more prone to scratching than some exotic woods. However, this relative softness makes ash comfortable underfoot and easy to install. For added durability, choose an engineered ash hardwood.

Maintenance

As with many softer woods, ash requires a little bit of extra care to make it moth and termite-proof. These precautions can be taken during installation. Regular maintenance will be similar to that of other hardwood species, and will require only a gentle dusting to remove dirt that could otherwise scratch the finish. This hardwood is prone to moisture, so remove spills quickly and do not install it in moisture-prone rooms.
