Spring is officially here, and while this brings warmer weather, longer days and beautiful flowers – it can be a rough time for allergy-sufferers. Pollen, dust and many other allergens can seem to go awry this time of year and there can be a lot of maintenance involved in keeping your home comfortable. Floor Coverings International of Intown Atlanta likes to help in any way we can, so we’ve rounded up some of the best ways to keep various types of floorings clean and free of allergens.
Carpet: While this isn’t the best flooring choice for allergy-sufferers, there are plenty of things you can do to make it work. It might seem obvious, but it’s worth reminding that vacuuming regularly is a great way to remove dirt and allergens from your carpet. It also removes sand and other gritty materials that can cause damage to your carpet over time. Families with children or pets should vacuum even more frequently to prevent damage and to keep up on dander.
Bamboo: Bamboo is hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. It bears a strong resemblance to hardwood and is incredibly durable. You’ll want to be sure to keep up with cleaning bamboo flooring using a soft cloth or a soft-bristled broom, and immediately clean up any liquid. Never steam clean your bamboo flooring and make sure you contact us to for a reputable brand that’s free of harsh chemicals.
Cork: Just like bamboo floors, cork floors are also hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. They come in a variety of colors and patterns. It is important to sweep or vacuum regularly, and spills should also be wiped up immediately to prevent absorption.
Tile: Tile is great because it can be easily wiped clean and is durable. It is important to ensure the tile is correctly installed and sealed (Hey, we can do that!) so that it doesn’t hold moisture and create mold or mildew.
Hardwood: Hardwood is another great flooring option for those who deal with allergies because of its hard surface and the fact that it’s easy to clean and maintain. Hardwood doesn’t trap allergens the way carpet can and as long as it has been properly installed and treated, it won’t create an environment for allergens to grow.
