At Floor Coverings International Intown Atlanta, we know hardwood. Homeowners in the greater Buckhead, Atlanta, Midtown area trust our quality products and expert opinions. Our Atlanta customers often ask us, “is hardwood compatible with my pets?” Contrary to popular belief, the answer is yes. Pets and hardwood floors can peacefully coexist as long as you follow these three tips.
One of the most important things you can do to protect your floor is to regularly sweep and vacuum. The benefit of vacuuming wall-to-wall carpeting is obvious: it removes dirt and allergens from deep within your carpet’s fibers. With hardwood, it is even more important because over time, outside contaminants wear away at your floor’s finish. Small rocks and grains of sand can even leave nasty scratches. Be sure to vacuum up Fido’s hair and all of the dirt he brings in from outside.
2. Buy your pet a bed.
Every dog and cat has their favorite spot to take a nap. Perhaps it’s in the corner of your living room, or by your feet in the den. Over time, you might notice greater wear and tear on these parts of your hardwood. This is because fur slowly wears away at the finish. This problem is easy to remedy: buy your dog or cat a sleeping mat or cushion. That way, they will sleep soundly and off of your gorgeous hardwood.
3. Clip their nails.
If you can hear the click-clack of a dog trotting across your kitchen, his nails are too long. The ASPCA recommends trimming canine nails before they touch the ground. This is easy to do once you have the right tools. Alternatively, a pet groomer will be happy to take care of it when Rover is in for his haircut.
